Rockchip RK3528: Built for 4K Boxes

Rockchip RK3528 combines four Cortex-A53 cores, Mali-450 graphics, and a 4K60 video decoder in a chip made for IPTV, OTT, and other inexpensive media devices. It also supports DDR4 or LPDDR4X memory, HDMI 2.0b, USB 3.0, PCIe 2.1, and two different Ethernet paths.

This is not a small RK3588. RK3528 has no NPU or modern GPU. The useful part is the media hardware: it decodes current 10-bit video formats without asking the CPU to do the heavy work.

Four Cortex-A53 Cores

Four Cortex-A53 cores are enough to run Android or Linux, a streaming interface, networking, and a few lightweight services. They are not a good foundation for a modern desktop, software compilation, or demanding emulation.

And the Cortex-A53 name alone doesn’t tell us how fast a finished box will feel. Memory, storage, cooling, and software all matter. Our Arm Cortex-A53 architecture guide explains why it now feels slow outside fixed-purpose devices.

The Mali-450 is similarly modest. OpenGL ES 1.1/2.0 and OpenVG 1.1 are fine for a television interface and simple graphics. Vulkan, OpenCL, and newer OpenGL ES versions aren’t listed in the datasheet. So a box may play 4K video perfectly well while still being poor at games.

Memory support is more current. The 32-bit controller accepts DDR4, LPDDR4, and LPDDR4X, with a 4GB address space. Storage can include eMMC 5.1, an SD card, or serial flash. Slow flash and too little RAM can still make a cheap box unpleasant to use.

The Video Hardware Does the Real Work

RK3528 decodes H.264, H.265, and AVS2 at up to 4K60, including 10-bit H.265. It also handles several older formats at lower resolutions. This is the reason to buy it: a media box doesn’t need fast CPU cores when a dedicated decoder processes the stream directly.

There is one awkward specification. Rockchip’s 2023 launch material describes decoding capability “up to 8K,” while the RK3528 V1.4 datasheet lists 4K60 as the maximum for H.264, H.265, and AVS2. Unless a device manufacturer documents a specific 8K mode, 4K60 is the safer figure to use. It is also what the HDMI output can actually display.

HDMI and Old Television Support

HDMI 2.0b provides up to 18Gbps bandwidth and 4096×2304 output at 60Hz. The display pipeline supports HDR10, HLG, SDR-to-HLG conversion, and HDR Vivid, although a finished product still needs suitable firmware and software.

Rockchip also kept a CVBS output for PAL and NTSC televisions. That looks strange beside 4K HDMI, but it makes sense where composite-video equipment remains in service.

Encoding is less ambitious. H.264 and H.265 stop at 1080p60, so RK3528 is much better at playing finished 4K content than creating it.

Useful I/O, with One Catch

RK3528 includes USB 3.0 and single-lane PCIe 2.1, but they share a combo PHY. A board designer normally has to choose how that high-speed connection is used rather than exposing full-speed USB 3.0 and PCIe at the same time. There is also a separate USB 2.0 host controller.

Networking is unusually flexible. One MAC supports Gigabit Ethernet through RGMII, while a second controller includes its own 10/100Mbps PHY. A manufacturer can build a device with two network connections, assuming it routes both interfaces.

That last qualification matters. A processor datasheet describes what the silicon can provide, not what every RK3528 box includes. PCIe may be used internally, Gigabit Ethernet may be replaced by the cheaper Fast Ethernet path, and a USB controller can end at an unpopulated pad. Check the board schematic or product manual before buying around one of these interfaces.

RK3528 Versus RK3328

RK3528 looks a lot like a revised RK3328: both use four Cortex-A53 cores, Mali-450 graphics, HDMI 2.0, and hardware 4K decoding. Our Rockchip RK3328 processor overview explains why that older chip worked well in TV boxes but became a poor general-purpose platform.

The newer RK3528 moves the media side forward with 4K60 decoding, H.265 encoding, newer HDR options, LPDDR4X support, and a more flexible combination of networking and high-speed I/O, unlike the Rockchip RK3568 processor overview. It does not solve the old CPU and GPU limitations. If an application needs a responsive Linux desktop, modern 3D graphics, or AI acceleration, the Rockchip RK3566 specifications are a more useful starting point.

For a new low-cost streaming box, IPTV receiver, digital-signage player, or simple network media appliance, RK3528 has most of the hardware that matters and very little that doesn’t. Just don’t buy it because a listing says quad-core 64-bit or 8K. The real specification worth paying for is reliable 4K60 decoding in a finished device with decent firmware.

FAQ

Does Rockchip RK3528 support 4K video?

Yes. RK3528 can decode selected video formats at up to 4K and 60 frames per second. Actual playback also depends on the firmware, media player, and codec support available on the device.

Is RK3528 suitable for Android TV boxes?

Yes. Rockchip designed RK3528 mainly for affordable TV boxes and other multimedia devices. Its hardware video decoder, HDMI output, and modest power requirements suit this role better than desktop computing.

Can Rockchip RK3528 run Linux?

The processor can run Linux, but support depends heavily on the individual board. Before buying an RK3528 device for Linux, check whether the manufacturer provides a working system image, drivers, and Device Tree files.

Does RK3528 have an NPU?

No. RK3528 does not include a dedicated neural processing unit. It is a multimedia processor rather than an edge AI platform.

Is RK3528 faster than RK3328?

Not dramatically in general CPU workloads: both processors use four Cortex-A53 cores. However, RK3528 provides a newer multimedia and connectivity platform, including 4K60 decoding, newer memory support, and PCIe.
